Green

I had an assignment last semester where we put many broken pieces of fused glass together, threw it in the kiln to cook, and came up with beautiful glass cabachons. I assorted mine as pairs, thinking that I would eventually make earrings, so this green cab has a twin lying around somewhere in my toolbox. But I think I’m hooked to making rings. There is something so symbolic about it.

I was pleasantly surprised at how it came alive under the right lighting. This one has the completed tumble polish, and I feel like the bezel fitting turned out much better.

The First Ring

The first ring! I used the vintage cabachon, and did not get a chance to do a final polish, so there is a lot of texture & it is a little messy. I’ll do that when I go into lab next week after spring break is over & post again.

My First Purchase

I had a couple hours to spare this past Wednesday. As I was driving down Rosemead, I made an impulsive stop at the San Gabriel Bead Company off of Live Oak Avenue. The moment I stepped in, my eyes bulged to the size of dinner plates. Difficult considering their chinkiness. Beads galore. I walked in and out of rows of beads in a daze. I found the vintage and gem cabachons, [stones or gems with a flat bottom] and was head over heels; it was very much a candy store. I began envisioning rings that I could make with each stone.

The lady behind the cashier looked at me warily over her glasses and said, “Be careful now. One can spend a lot of money here.” What could she possibly mean? I had gotten enough of the good stuff to make 7 rings in under 20 dollars. I nodded innocently, clasping my small bag of purchases, my eyes shining with the promise of raw materials.  She gave me one more amused glance before waving bye.

1 sunstone

2 green adventurines

2 vintage cabachons

Here are my first purchases of stones! I also got a small sheet of silver, 1″x3.5″.
